Rugged surf coast, abundant wildlife, calm beaches and quaint seaside towns, Phillip Island embodies all that you need for that short family break. Less than a 90 minute drive from Melbourne and you will be in the heart of what is essentially a farming community but attracts surfers and tourists in the droves.
We chose to stay in relaxed luxury at Verandah Retreat, the lovely hamptons inspired house that is the epitome of five star family living. There really is no other place to stay in Phillip Island if you are looking for a luxury property. With 4 bedrooms, two bathrooms, fabulous kitchen and living areas opening up to a substantial verandah and lush lawned garden, with fragrant fruit trees and herb garden. Perfect for family entertaining and suiting children of all ages, you can even bring your four-legged friends with you as well! You can check it out for yourself here.
After you have explored the towns and visited the numerous beaches, there are lots of activities to keep you entertained on the island, from penguins and koala encounters to mazes and mini golf. Churchill Island Heritage Farm is lovely to visit and they have a great market where you can buy local produce. Over summer they also have a fabulous market on the foreshore of Cowes, where you can listen to live music, eat from food vans and purchase fresh produce and products from local artisans. There are even international motorsport events held in Phillip Island throughout the year. If you fancy a winter getaway make sure not to miss the Whale Festival in July, where you can witness the migration of the amazing Humpback and Southern Right whales.
